A Note...

... to our loyal readers.

Guy is in Sweden, currently, and Girl is in Canada. No, we did not split up, as one of you has commented, but we do come from different sides of the world and this tends to happen when you are stupid enough to get involved in a long distance relationship.

So! To those of you who are expecting this website to be kept up to date on a regular basis (even after the fact that this has never happened so far), you will be disappointed.

But! We will try to watch the same movies, and we will try to write reviews about them at some point, then try to post those reviews on a semi-timely basis... maybe.

Some of you may call this a stilted promise, but we just call it reality. Unlike Lindsay Lohan, we have our feet planted firmly in it.

TOMBSTONE

Guy loves the wild west.

I’m gonna talk more about other western movies than “Tombstone” right now. I know Girl likes this movie and so do I, but there’s a bunch of movies that come to mind when we talk about this genre that are a lot better. I showed Girl “Unforgiven” not long ago (review is to be found on the site). That was probably one of the Clint Eastwood movies ever and also the western movie that stopped the genre. Nothing has been good enough to rival it. Before however there was a sea of great ones (“Once Upon a Time in the West”, “TGTBTU”, “Nevada Smith” and many, many more).

I would like to add this movie to the western classic right now. I don’t think people view it as a classic in this field so here we go. Val Kilmer does the part of Doc Holiday better than anyone ever has. Kurt Russell is a better Wyatt Earp than Kevin Costner could ever hope and Sam Elliott is good in anything.

I wish that anyone could come along and blow some life back into these types of movie. I doubt it however when movies like “Jonah Hex” are on the way out where they insert the super hero theme into the world of gunslinger. Why can’t people just be happy with a shootout at noon? I am, so get with it everybody.

I remember now! “The Proposition” is the best western movie that has come out in a long time. So if you really love outlaws and all that shit, then watch that.It will calm your hunger for a little while.

Guy’s Rating: As a reviewer I dub thee a classic.

Girl’s favorite...

Growing up, this was one of my favorite all time movies. I loved the characters, the deaths, the ending. Doc Holiday was the coolest character I knew, and the only role I liked Val Kilmer in (otherwise I find him a bit creepy). Tuberculosis suited him well.

Basically, if you haven’t seen this classic, then you have to. It was speak for itself.

Girl’s Rating: Rent it sometime, or add it to the DVD collection. It deserves a spot on anyone’s shelf.

BOOGIE WOOGIE

Guy’s Ush!

This movie is based in the art world of London. We follow a bunch of people who buy and sell art... That’s pretty much it. They makers of this movie really tried to make something interesting with this by inserting adultery and a girl that almost dies because she has a twin corpse inside of her.

The cast is pretty great and that was the only reason I even sat through the film. I mean I’m Swedish so I have to support the movies that our own Stellan Skarsgård appears in. I’m sorry to say however that even his acting was just mediocre. On another note, Gillian Anderson has aged very gracefully. She looks even better than she did when she was the non-believer in “The X-Files”.

Guy’s Rating: Steer clear of this movie.

Girl’s weird...

Odd cast. Odd premise. Odd moral of the story.

Scully teams up with the Spy Who Shagged Austion Powers who teams up with Chloe/the girl who seems to be in everything right now (Amanda Seyfield) who teams up with the dad in 28 Days Later who teams up with Monica and Ross’ Dad. Odd cast, right? Yeah. You got everything from the supernatural to the slutty covered concerning acting experience, which is probably why it was so hard to nail exactly what these characters were about and what the tone of the movie was.

I think that the overall idea was that the art world is cut throat, which is not news to anyone, by the way. This idea got lost in plots within plots within affairs within more affairs. It was all very incestuous, and WHAT was with that dead twin inside Amanda??

Girl’s Rating: Uhm, no.

WATERWORLD (100th Post Special Pick?)

Guy’s Review...

I got the Bluray extended edition and decided to sit down and watch it again. I know that this movie is considered one of the worst movie of all time. I think that’s just a little bit unfair. Dudley Do-Right is way, way, way worse than this movie. I find it entertaining, visually stimulating and a fun movie experience. Kevin Costner’s character might beat kids and sell women but he fucking caught a fish the size of a bus using his own body as bait. You have to agree that that’s pretty awesome.

I wonder how they pitched this movie. “It’s like Mad Max but in water!”, I bet the executives yelled “Sold!!” at the top of their lungs. I guess Costner was one of the biggest guys around at the time as well so I bet that helped the movie along a little bit.

I just remember watching it as a kid and loving in. Now when our ice caps are melting at a rapid pace this world might not be so far away. This fucking freaks me out considering that I hate boats and being on the water. Hell, I can’t even take a dip where I can’t see the bottom.

Guy’s Rating: Definitely not one of the worst movies ever.

Girl’s Classic Bad!

I did not know this was considered one of the worst movies ever until I went to Film School. And even though I know that now, it doesn’t change my opinion.

This is another TV movie. Best watched in bits and parts on a lazy Sunday afternoon when there is nothing else on. In this situation, it is best enjoyed. It’s not one you pick out in the movie rental store, or buy a limited edition copy of (if they even have one), but it is one to enjoy guilt-free when TV provides it.

Why is it enjoyable? As guy said, Costner’s character is pretty wicked, hitting kids, selling women, and catching monster fish. The bad guys are cookie-cut Mad Max bad guys, so they aren’t that interesting, but whatever. It’s not like this movie is enjoyable for it’s in depth analysis of interesting characters. It’s just enjoyable because the premise is fun, the characters are ridiculous and everyone loves a good flick that depicts the future in some crazy, totally not-going-to-happen way...

Girl’s rating: Definitely watch it when on TV.

99th POST SPECIAL: TV Series Recommendations

Girl’s Top Five Genre Picks:

1. The Cartoon - Naruto - Guy got me started watching this animation series out of Japan and it is definitely up my alley!

2. The Sitcom - How I Met Your Mother - Willow has grown up and out of that lesbian phase.

3. The One-Hour Drama - Breaking Bad - I go to movies for drama, and, I mean, there is drama in everything... So, even though I’ve never seen a single episode, I recommend this off the hype Guy and my brother have created around the series.

4. The One-Hour Sci-Fi/Fantasy - Fringe - I hated (like, seriously, hated) Denethor, The Steward of Gondor in Minas Tirith. When he makes Pippin sing while Faramir rides to his death... What an asshole! So, the fact I almost cry every time Walter Bishop gets sad in Fringe goes to show how captivating an actor John Noble is.

5. The Nostalgic Pick - News Radio - Just for a fun, if you haven’t seen an episode of this old series, you should. It was a pretty good sitcom.

Guy’s Top Five Genre Picks:

1. The Cartoon - Cowboy Bebop - I know this is an oldie but I think is relevant that people sit down and watch this great anime considering it’s being made into a live action movie in the States. Hopefully they won’t screw it up as bad as they did Dragon Ball.

2. The Sitcom - Rules of Engagement - The show might not be a huge laugh but the acting and comedy of Patrick Warburton is awesome. He’ll make me laugh in every scene that he’s in.

3. The One-Hour Drama - Sons of Anarchy - This series started off kinda slow but now in my opinion it’s in the ranks of “The Sopranos”. The best crime drama on television right know. Third season is coming up so get the first two on DVD.

4. The One-Hour Sci-Fi/Fantasy - Fringe - Girl is a 110% percent right Walter Bishop will make your heart quiver in every scene he’s in. On another note this series is complex, funny, full of great special effects and you actually feel for every single character. What else do you need?

5. The DVD/Bluray-Box Set - Battlestar Galactica - It feels like it’s been awhile since this show was on TV. Well, now you don’t have to watch reruns, just get the complete series and enjoy it over a full week or something. “Caprica” is not gonna fill the void that this show left behind. Let’s just hope the DVDs will.

BLADE TRINITY

Guy´s pay your taxes...

Wesley hasn’t been seen for the longest time now and I wish that he would come back and reprise his role as Blade. I guess he had some trouble with the government when it came to paying his taxes. So now Blade is dead in the water and if I get my say, I would say that it ended on a low note.

Blade II is fantastic thanks to Del Toro and the first in the trilogy has one of the coolest opening scenes in the superhero genre. However nr. 3 is not that exciting. Sure Biel bulked up and came of as a hard ass and Girl’s favorite Ryan Reynolds started a long career in this genre.I guess he will have the record in appearing in different superhero movies (Green Lantern, Deadpool, Wolverine and this).

I love anything with vampires which makes me enjoy this movie somewhat. I just felt that Wesley overplayed his character and the movie just looked bland in general. I think a rewamp is in order and that they should attach a new Blade and a cool new director such as Zach Snyder or something.

Guy’s Rating: I love Blade and I guess this gets to be a part of the vampire collection anyway.

Girl’s yummy...

Did you see the scene where Ryan Reynolds is chained down and shirtless? I did. The Prison Break guy isn't that bad to look at, either.

Girl’s Rating: Not the best (Biel’s character is super annoying), but still fun.

LÉON: THE PROFESSIONAL

Girl’s finally...

Hmmm. Interesting. This is what everyone has been talking about.

To be honest? I wasn’t an immediate fan. Natalie Portman kind of creeps me out as a little girl who wants to kill people. I get it. She is upset about her family dying and was a bit odd to begin with. The scene when she walks past the door to his is a great scene! But she is still creepy to me. Maybe because she is the witch of Hollywood, creating trouble wherever she goes... The character of Leon is amazing and Reno peaked as an actor with this role.

Girl’s Rating: As a whole, this movie was pretty awesome and is a must see. Did it make my favorites? No.

Guy’s Review...

When I found out that Girl had missed this gem I immediately got the Bluray release and popped it into the player. I told her that I wished that I was her so that this would be the first time I saw it as well.

Luc Besson was genius in the 80’s and 90’s. He made this, “The Fifth Element” and “ The Big Blue”. All these movies are great and “Léon” is probably the one to beat. It had gone some time since I saw this but I was as sucked in as the first time when I saw it. He uses music and cameras in a way that sets him apart from any other filmmaker. Isn’t that what you want as a guy in the arts. The ability for an audience to recognize your work from the first screen.

I hope everybody has seen this movie by now and that the know the story about the little girl that has her family killed and the hitman that takes her in. A weird couple that creates an amazing bond in a fucked up world.

For the actors. This is Jean Reno’s (Léon) best role to date and he will sadly never ever do anything better than this. At least not when keeps popping up in movies like “The Pink Panther”. Gary Oldman showed everybody that he was the one to beat when it comes to portraing villains. Pretending to be listening to Beethoven as he kills women and children is truly terrifying.

Guy’s Rating: One of the best movies... all time.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II

Guy now knows that he was an idiot as a teen.

There’s a bunch of action movies that I would defend to the end that I watched as a kid that now would be considered trash. Movies like “Commando”, “Double Impact” and “Universal Soldier”. I almost feel ashamed that I liked “M:I:2” when I was a young teen. I think I was too caught up in John Woo and thought that he could do nothing wrong (“Face/Off”, “Killer”, “Hard Target”). Now later in his career he’s ruined any chance to come back to Hollywood with blunders like “Windtalkers” and “Paycheck”.

Watching this again I almost found it laughable. There’s sooooo many slow motions scenes that if they took them away the movie would be half an hour long. Tom Cruise should never have had that semi long hair. He’s way too pretty that he almost looks like a girl.

Guy’s Rating: Watch Brian De Palma’s “Mission Impossible” instead, it holds up.

Girl agrees. No review or rating necessary.
